The « Doré » way of life in Paris

It is said he brought the « power of the imagination to Europe ». Mainly thanks to his illustrations… Gustave Doré has illuminated a big part of the 19th century with black, verve and humour! Discover the « Doré » way of life thanks to the beautiful exhibition the Musée d'Orsay dedicated to him until June 5.

It is true that the Musée d'Orsay is a cult place for all those who love 19th century art in Paris. The former train station revisited as a museum was the ideal place to present this big exhibition about Gustave Doré (1832-1883), mainly celebrated for his incredible etchings of the works of Dante, Rabelais, Hugo or Balzac.

Original or imaginary. This time, in stead of just stopping at the illustrations that may have made the French artist famous, the exhibition meticulously reveals all the other sides of his work and his talents. From drawing to painting, from watercolour to sculpture. Often original or imaginary, the inspiration of Doré is expressed in all ranges of emotion!

The New Year looks very promising! Not only will you stay in the cosy setting of the Opera Cadet Hotel, but also enjoy the scandalous surprise that the city has in store close by… Discover the Kama-Sutra, featured in the context of civilization until 11 January at the Pinacothèque of Paris.

A great success! There will be some sauciness of course, as the exhibit presents the Kama-Sutra, famous erotic Indian literature that has long provoked the Western mind. Do not let yourself be deceived. Open your eyes and let this exhibit debunk a few misconceptions.

This book is more than erotic, but mystical! To support this thesis: over 500 works, including sculptures, painting, miniatures, are presented in addition to the famous "pillow book"! This evidence beautifully shows that the work was written through the desires of an elite to guide the people to virtue, well-being and love. http://www.pinacotheque.com/fr/accueil/expositions/aujourdhui.html

The end of the year is really magical in Paris. If you have already stayed at the Opéra-Cadet at that time of the year, you know it very well. Illuminations, Christmas markets, animations… ; all becomes tender, welcoming and sparkling of surprises. An excellent occasion to discover the main must-see exhibitions of Paris.

You’ll obviously be charmed by the illuminations, particularly on the Champs-Elysées. And between two glasses of mulled wine and culinary discoveries, you’ll be strolling along the incredible stalls of the Christmas markets where the entire family can enjoy the Ferris Wheel of La Concorde or the ice rink of the Hôtel de Ville.

Champagne and culture! But maybe you’ll soon be charmed by the culture that Paris has to offer. Why not visit the famous Nanas of Niki de Saint Phalle at the Grand Palais?  Or maybe the Mickael Jacksons and vacuum cleaners signed by Jeff Koons at the Centre Pompidou? Christmas makes the best of champagne bubbles!

A few minutes from your Parisian hotel and the district of the Opéra, you can discover an exceptionally elegant site in Paris. Dedicated to music and dance, the Théâtre du Châtelet will offer beautiful nights out to our American guests thanks to the repertoire inspired by the Variety Theater, musicals and jazz! Worth to be seen!

You’ll be thinking Broadway, Hollywood… but you’re actually in the 4th district of Paris, in a very 19th century and magnificent building. Inside the Théâtre du Châtelet everything swings, bops and taps. And that’s normal as it jazzes in English, with a remarkable programme of musicals, Variety Theater and jazz shows.

Musicals, variety theater... The venerable Napoleon III building inaugurated in 1862 has been directed in a very stimulating and transatlantic way by Jean-Luc Choplin since 2006. This is demonstrated by the recent representation and world premiere of An American in Paris.  http://chatelet-theatre.com/

The entirely new Fondation Louis Vuitton, a vessel with twelve sails of glass, creates the event in Paris. Dedicated to modern art, this original building signed by Franck Gehry welcomes a public interested by artistic creations like music or gastronomy. This must-see site can be discovered during your next stay at the Opéra Cadet!

To do so, you must come to the Jardin d’Acclimatation of the Bois de Boulogne. In this green and pleasant space of Paris, a true lung of the capital, you’ll see the growing masts of this imposing silver nave consecrating modern art as an open sea adventure searching for its America.

An ark of culture. You’ll be walking in the footsteps of Bernard Arnault, owner of the LVMH group, who wanted this site with the intention to exhibit the works of his personal collection. But the Fondation also houses a gastronomical restaurant led by the Michelin starred chef Nomicos and a concert room... http://www.fondationlouisvuitton.fr/

Brasses and jazz tempos, Parisian musical romance and love affair of the roaring twenties, An American in Paris is a famous symphonic poem of Gershwin.  Experience his world premiere during a stay at the Opéra Cadet: for the first time, musical work is combined with a live performance at the Théâtre du Chatelet at the end of November!

Love forever… in Paris, capital of sentiment and romanticism. The love passion of Jerry, the American GI, for Lise, the Parisian from Montmartre; will bring you glamourous emotion in November. Long, so long after the only movie adaptation that we know of An American in Paris - Oh Gene Kelly...

Like on Broadway… But this time, a live performance will take hold of the myth and will steal the show. Joy, but also blues and love swing will await you in the 1920s and in the magnificent 19th century building of the Théâtre du Châtelet. Oh yeah http://chatelet-theatre.com/fr/event/an-american-in-paris

« The Palais Royal is a beautiful district where all the girls can be married » says an old French song. Today, it is still one of the most beautiful districts of Paris, and it is (very) accessible in a few minutes walking from the Opéra Cadet. So why resist the temptation to explore it? Here’s a visit.

You’ll only need to let yourself walk down the (very) beautiful Avenue d'Opéra. At the end, turn left, towards the Palais Royal. Originally called the Palais Cardinal, the building used to belong to the sworn enemy of the Three Musketeers... the Cardinal Richelieu...

From the Palais Royal to its gardens... Before it became the residence of the future Louis XIV. Today, the site houses the Council of State and the Constitutional Council. Then, you’ll walk around the Comédie Française before marveling before the columns of Buren, at the heart of the gardens where the rustle of the basins adds charm to the place.

If you have discovered the district of the Palais Royal, so close to the Opéra Cadet that it can be explored by foot, you’ll probably already know that it holds one of the most legendary institutions of Paris: the Comédie Française. One of the eldest theatres of the world will welcome you in October for a leading show: Dom Juan by Molière.

During the day, you’ll be visiting its small streets for its tasty restaurants and trendy shopping addresses. Under the archways of the Palais Royal, along the Rue Saint Honoré or on the Place des Victoires - Christian Louboutin, Pierre Hardy, Marc Jacobs, Stella Mc Cartney…

Your theatre nights.  But when the evening falls, it’s rather the Comédie Française that attracts the eye. Since 1680, and following Molière and its troupe, the most famous artists and directors have become its members. In October, you’ll find Dom Juan by Molière, directed by Jean-Pierre Vincent.

Sometimes, she shot with a rifle on paintings and she made sensational feminist declarations. That is what Niki de Saint Phalle was like. This great figure of modern art (1930-2002) is celebrated in Paris today, thanks to a splendid exhibition at the Grand Palais. A must-see event during your stay at the Opéra Cadet. From September 17.

Yes, it is true we remember her for her provocations, her wild happenings and daring performances. But also for her famous « nanas » (dolls) and her rich, colourful and multicultural artistic world.

What a doll! Along her hundreds of eclectic works as a painter, assembler, sculptor, engraver and filmmaker, you’ll also discover this original artist by the less known sides of her work. From the « New Realism » to the Pop Art, you’ll cross the entire history of the 20th century avant-gardes! http://www.grandpalais.fr/fr/evenement/niki-de-saint-phalle
